Bridgeport, CT- The women's basketball team came from behind to down Fairfield 59-45 this evening at the Arena at Harbor Yard. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 9-7 overall, 5-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), while the Stags fall to 4-13, 2-5 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes were down early in the first half, as Fairfield opened up an 8-0 lead over the first eight minutes of play. But Marist began to creep back, tying the score at 15 on a Stephanie Del Preore lay-up with 5:32 remaining in the half. The Stags regained the lead on a 4-2 spurt, but Marist was able to tie the game 21-21 on two Del Preore free throws with six seconds remaining. The Stags did not give up as Candice Lindsay hit a jumper as the clock ran down to give Fairfield a 23-21 lead.
Marist began the second half on a 12-1 run and never looked back. The Red Foxes continued to build on their lead throughout the half, increasing it to as much as 16 points, 54-38, with under two minutes remaining.
Del Preore led the way for Marist, notching her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Maureen Magarity added 11 points, including her 700th career point, and eight rebounds. Laura Whitney was also in double-digits with 10 points.
As a team, Marist played very well defensively, holding Stags leading scorer Janelle McManus (11.6ppg)to just five points. And while Fairfield guard Schreme Isidora netted 14 points on the night, Marist held her to just two in the second half. Freshman Alisa Kresge had a career-high eight rebounds, all on the defensive end, as well as four steals.
Off the bench for Marist, Kerry Sullivan tallied eight points, while Megan Vetter chipped in with seven. Freshman Kristin Hein had a season-high five points.
Marist returns to action on Sunday, January 25th as they tip-off against Saint Peter's at 2:00pm at the McCann Center. It is also Take A Kid to the Game Day at Marist and any child 18 and under will receive free admission when accompanied by a paying adult.
