Marist Falls 67-64 To Saint Peter's

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team dropped a 67-64 decision this evening to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Saint Peter's, at the McCann Center.

The Red Foxes (5-12; 3-5) trailed 59-51 with 5:32 remaining in the game, but rallied, scoring the next six points, to cut the deficit to 59-57 with 3:38 to go. The lead would never get larger then four points the rest of the way, with Marist cutting it to one-point, 65-64 with 4.0 seconds remaining. Shane Nichols connected on two free throws with 2.5 seconds to play, and a Pierre Monagan three-pointer would have counted at the buzzer, but it went long.

Saint Peters (11-6; 7-1) trailed 37-34 at halftime, but opened the second period with an 8-0 to take a 42-37 lead with 17:56 to go, a lead they would never relinquish. Marist need nearly four minutes before Chris Handy scored the Red Foxes first points of the second half.

Will Whittington a freshman, gave the Red Foxes a spark off of the bench, as he connected on 3-4 field goals, all from downtown, on his way to a career-high 13 points. He was also 5-6 from the free throw line. Marist finished 20-28 (37.3%) from the stripe, while Saint Peter's went 14-18 (39.1%).

Keydren Clark led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 9-26 from the field, and recorded a game-high five steals. Ron Yates and Jamie Sowers both had 12 points, and Rafael Martinez came off of the bench for a game-high 11 rebounds.

Monagan scored 12 points and led the team with four assists, while Brandon Ellerbee added10 points and five boards for Marist. Handy and Will McClurkin both had seven rebounds for Marist.

The Peacocks shot 39.1 percent, 25-64 from the field for the game and 3-19 from three-point range. Marist was just 19-51 from the field for the game, 37.3 percent, including going just 6-23, 26.1 percent, in the second half. Marist was 6-20 from three-point range.

Saint Peter's won the battle of the boards 41-38, with 18 offensive rebounds leading to 21-second chance points. The Peacocks also dominated in the paint, outscoring Marist 41-16.

The Red Foxes return to action on Thursday, January 29th, traveling to Baltimore, MD to take on Loyola College in a 7:30 pm contest.
