Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's basketball beat Saint Peter's College (10-7, 5-3) in dramatic fashion 77-74 this afternoon at the McCann Center. With the win, the Red Foxes (10-7, 6-2) regain sole possession of first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Sophomore Kristen Vilardi sank two free throws with 17 seconds remaining to seal the win for Marist. The Red Foxes were up by as much as 13 points at the 9:05 mark before the Peahens started to chip into the lead. Saint Peter's senior Lindsay Gonzalez hit a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to tie the game 74-74. Senior Stephanie Del Preore put Marist ahead 75-74 when she hit one of two free throws.
In the first half, the Red Foxes and the Peahens exchanged leads six times, before Marist pulled ahead for good on a jumper by Kristin Keller with 1:40 remaining. Marist headed into the break with a 33-30 lead.
Del Preore notched her second double-double in consecutive games with 17 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes of play. Maureen Magarity had a solid game tallying 16 points, five assists, two steals and a career-high three blocks. Keller added 16 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench.
For Saint Peter's Gonzalez led the way with 20 points, while Tyonna Vance chipped in with 15 points. Shaka Cushnie pulled down 11 boards.
As a team, Marist shot 42.4 percent from the floor and 54.5 percent from beyond the arc.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Thursday, January 29th as Loyola visits the McCann Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
