The Marist volleyball team fell to MAAC foe Niagara this afternoon, 3-2. After falling 30-17 in game one, the Red Foxes mounted a comeback to take the match to five games. Marist lost the match by a heartbreaking 20-18 score in the battle for game five.
After being down a game, Marist rebounded to take the second game of the match, 30-26. The Purple Eagles came back strong, taking game three, 30-25, but giving up game four to Marist, 30-28. Both teams hit well in game five, but the Red Foxes' .355 hitting percentage was not enough to overcome the Purple Eagles, who eventually took the hard-fought game, 20-18.
Marist was led by sophomore Sally Hanson (Guerneville, CA), who hit over .400 for the second time this weekend, tallying 19 kills as well as four service aces and six total blocks. Classmate Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, PA) continued her solid hitting streak, posting 17 kills on offense. A trio of Marist players pulled in double-digit digs including junior captain Katie Lux (Wantagh, NY) who led with 19 as well as sophomore Kim McEathron (Ballston Spa, NY) who was just shy of a double-double, with 17 digs and nine kills. Dominique O'Sullivan (Anaheim, CA) recorded 14 digs while junior captain Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, CA) tallied assists on 56 of Marist's 66 kills.
The Purple Eagles were led by Erin Graham and Raelean Rush, who each recorded double-doubles, as well as Michelle DeSouder, who hammered home 30 kills for the win.
The Lady Red Foxes return to action this week as they travel to Central Connecticut State for their second meeting of the season. They will look to even the fall series this Wendesday, Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in New Britain.
