Poughkeepsie, NY -
The Marist women's soccer team fell to MAAC foe Iona this afternoon, 2-1 in its final home match of the 2004 season. The Lady Red Foxes honored senior tri-captains Laura Clark, Libby Ludwig and Courtney Moore prior to the contest. After being down, 2-0 at the half, Moore put the Red Foxes on the board with 16:00 remaining in play, but the team could not manage the tying goal.
The Gaels struck early in the game, as Eleri Earnshaw found the back of the net off a free kick from 15 yards out, just 6:25 into the match. The shot hit the post and snuck past a diving Danielle Cibelli (Paramus, NJ). Both teams would trade offensive possessions and missed shots until Iona's Emily Martin hammered home a high free kick, just above Cibelli's reach with under ten minutes remaining in the half.
Iona took the 2-0 advantage into the half and held Marist scoreless for much of the second half. The Red Foxes turned up the offensive pressure in the second, taking five of their eight shots during that period. At 73:53, Moore took advantage of a deflected shot and slipped Marist's lone goal past goalkeeper Jessica Martin. It was her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Though Marist would control much of the closing minutes of the game, the two teams traded fouls and neither could mount a solid offensive attack, with the Gaels taking the win, 2-1.
The Red Foxes will travel to Manhattan and St. Peter's next weekend to close out the MAAC regular season, facing the Jaspers on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and the Peahens at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
