New Rochelle, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team, ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA New York Region poll, earned its sixth consecutive shutout victory today with a 3-0 win at conference foe Iona. Six different Red Foxes recorded points in the victory.
Sophomore forward Keith Detelj got the scoring started in the 31st minute with his seventh goal of the season, heading the ball past Gaels netminder Patrick McAllen. Junior midfielder Matt Flaherty had the assist.
The Red Foxes (8-4, 5-0 MAAC) struck again shortly before halftime on sophomore midfielder Anthony Graci's sixth goal of the season, scored in the 43rd minute off a rebound. Junior midfielder Kyle Nunes and senior co-captain Patrick Safino were credited with the assists.
Senior co-captain David Musinski capped off the match by scoring off a free kick with 53 seconds remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Valenti made four saves to extend the school-record consecutive shutout streak to six. McAllen made four saves for Iona (4-10, 1-6 MAAC).
With the win, Marist moves into a tie with Loyola for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the conference tournament, which will be hosted by Rider.
The Red Foxes return home Friday, Oct. 29 to take on conference foe Manhattan. Game time is 7 p.m.
