Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist men's soccer team had its seven-game consecutive shutout win streak stopped tonight on Leonidoff Field in its home finale. Vicente Caldas converted a penalty kick in double overtime to give visiting St. Peter's the 2-1 victory over the Red Foxes.
At the 105:42 mark in the second extra period, Peacocks forward Murphy Wiredu was fouled inside the box by a Marist defender. Caldas took the penalty kick and put it inside the upper corner of the near post for the game-winning goal.
Junior midfielder Bruno Machado scored his second goal of the season in the 19th minute to give Marist the early lead, which it held until the 60th minute, when Wiredu scored his MAAC-leading ninth goal of the season off a rebounded shot by Carlos Villacres, who was credited with the assist. The teams remained tied until Caldas's golden goal.
Wiredu's goal was the first by a Marist opponent since Adrian Moreno of Army scored on September 29. Senior goalkeeper Mike Valenti and the Red Foxes went 721:55 without allowing a goal.
Valenti made seven saves for Marist. Pat Nagawiecki made five saves for St. Peter's. Marist was outshot, 22-15. 60 fouls were called and six cards were handed out, including one red card to each team.
The eight Marist seniors on the 2004 squad, J.R. Balzarini, Matt Flaherty, Matt Morsch, David Musinski, Patrick Safino and Valenti were honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Night.
The Red Foxes travel to Loyola and Rider to conclude the regular season. Game time on Friday at Loyola is 3 p.m. while Sunday's match at Rider will start at 1 p.m.
