Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist Red Foxes opened their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule with a 5-0 victory over visiting Canisius tonight at Leonidoff Field. Marist scored five goals for the first time since blanking Iona 5-0 last October 24.
Senior midfielder and co-captain David Musinski scored his first two goals of the season in the 17th and 33rd minute to provide all the scoring Marist (4-4, 1-0 MAAC) would need. Senior midfielder Matt Flaherty assisted Musinski's first goal, while the second goal was scored off a free kick.
Junior back Peter Rea added a goal, his first of the season, with just 13 seconds left before halftime. Rea took an entry pass from senior forward and co-captain Patrick Safino and beat Canisius (1-8, 0-1 MAAC) goalkeeper Adam Sleyzak.
The Red Foxes would score twice in the second half. Senior midfielder Matt Morsch scored his first career goal in the 50th minute off a Kyle Nunes corner kick. Sophomore forward Keith Detelj would cap off the scoring with his fifth goal of 2004, scored in the 76th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Valenti did not have to make a save to record his second consecutive shutout, the fifth of his career.
Marist continues MAAC play Sunday, hosting Niagara at 1 p.m.
