Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Marist men's soccer team (9-7, 6-3 MAAC) finished the regular season with a 2-1 loss to host Rider today. The Red Foxes will be the #3 seed for next weekend's MAAC Tournament.
Sophomore forward Keith Detelj tallied his team-leading ninth goal in the 74th minute for Marist's score. Junior forward Bobby Van Dyke picked up his second assist.
After a scoreless first half, Rider's Lee Tomasso scored off a pass from Brian Laurinaitis in the 55th minute. Exactly four minutes later, Laurinaitis put a rebound past Marist senior goalkeeper Mike Valenti to put the Broncs up 2-0.
Valenti made two saves and sophomore Michael Danyo made three saves after coming on in the 60th minute. Daniel Riverso stopped 11 shots for Rider. The Red Foxes outshot Rider 20-11.
The win allowed the Broncs (5-13, 5-4 MAAC) to capture the fourth and final berth in the conference championship tournament next weekend at Rider. In Friday's semifinal action, the third-seeded Red Foxes will take on #2 seed St. Peter's while top seed Loyola faces Rider. The semifinal winners will meet on Sunday for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
