Poughkeepsie, NY-The Marist College women's basketball team continued to control their home court downing Manhattan College 68-56 this evening at the McCann Center. With the win, the Red Foxes (13-9, 9-4 MAAC) moved into a two-way tie with Niagara for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The victory brings the Red Foxes win total in the MAAC to nine games, the most since Marist joined the league in 1997.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Jaspers and the Red Foxes traded buckets over the first eight minutes of the game until senior Nina Vecchio hit a three-pointer at the 11:48 mark to spark a 7-0 run. Down 21-14, the Jaspers did not give up, coming back to tie the score 21-21 on a three by Rosalee Mason. The two teams again traded baskets before the Red Foxes began to pull away for good, hitting four of five free throws in the final minute of the half to give them a 35-32 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, the Red Foxes continued to add to their lead, going up by as much as nine with point with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Jaspers cut the lead to 50-46 at the 9:04 mark on a Nikoletta Deutsch three-pointer, but the Red Foxes countered with two Kristin Keller ree throws. The Jaspers cut the lead to four again on a pair of free throws, but could not overtake Marist.
Senior Maureen Magarity led the way with 16 points on 5-10 shooting and tied a career-high with three blocks, while Keller finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Senior Stephanie Del Preore was also in double-figures with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman Vicki Wancel and Vecchio each chipped in with seven points.
For the Jaspers, Deutsch led the way with 15 points while Mason added 13 points and nine rebounds. Guard Donnette Reed finished with 12 points.
The Red Foxes, who moved to 10-1 at home for the first time in program history, are back in action on Sunday, February 14th as they travel to Saint Peter's for a 4:00pm tip-off.
