Jersey City, NJ- The Marist College women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Saint Peter's College with an exciting 54-51 victory this afternoon. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 14-9 overall and 10-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), the most since joining the league. Marist still remains tied with Niagara for first place in the MAAC.
Senior Maureen Magarity hit a jumper with 22 seconds reamaining to put the Red Foxes on top 52-51. Fellow senior Stephanie Del Preore sank two free throws with three seconds left to seal the Marist victory.
Marist and Saint Peter's battled it out most of the way with 13 lead changes. After taking a 14-5 at the 11:05 mark in the first half, the Peahens pecked away at the Marist lead while holding the Red Foxes scoreless for almost four minutes. Saint Peter's tied the game 16-16 at the 7:10 mark but Marist went on a quick 4-0 spurt regain the lead. The Peahens countered going on a 10-1 run to end the half and taking a 26-21 lead into the break.
The two teams continued to exchange baskets throughout the second half. With 2:28 remaining, Alisa Kresge hit one of two free throws to put the Red Foxes ahead 50-46. Nine seconds later, Saint Peter's Shaka Cushnie made a lay up to cut the deficit to two points. Saint Peter's tied the score 50-50 one minute later which would set up Magarity's crucial jumper.
Magarity lead the way for the Red Foxes with 24 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, good for her first double-double of the season. Junior Kristin Keller added 12 points and five assists, while Del Preore finished with seven points.
As a team, the Red Foxes shot 40 percent from the floor, while the Peahens shot 42.6 percent. Marist turned the ball over just nine times while forcing 16 Saint Peter's turnovers.
The Red Foxes return to action on Tuesday, February 10th at they travel to Loyola.
