Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak, defeating visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival 59-57 this evening at the McCann Center. Carl Hood scored a team-high 17 points to lead four Red Foxes in double-figures in the outing.
Iona (7-16; 5-9) tied the score 53-53 with 3:43 to play in the game and after a 5-2 Marist run, closed to within one-point, 56-55 with 63 seconds to play. Brandon Ellerbee connected on his first field goal of the game with 34 seconds to play and Eric Siegrist had his only point, a free throw, with 15 seconds to play to seal the win. A Steve Burtt jumper rimmed out with :01 remaining and Hood pulled in the rebound as the buzzer sounded.
Marist (6-17; 4-10) led by as many as 11 points in the second half (18:02), 39-28, and were up by 10 points six different times in the last half of play.
Hood led all players with nine rebounds, his season-high, including four on the offensive glass. Will McClurkin scored 14 points, on 6-10 shooting, while Chris Handy and Jared Jordan had 10 points each. Jordan played another complete game, dishing out a career-high eight assists, pulling down five boards, three offensive, and recorded three steals. Handy had six boards and McClurkin five for the Red Foxes.
Marist shot 41.2 percent, 21-51, for the game, while holding Iona to a38 percent, 19-50. The Red Foxes were out rebounded 37-33 but forced 20 Iona turnovers.
Iona led just once in the game, 3-2, 1:50 into the first half. Greg Jenkins led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 9-17 from the field and 8-11 from the free throw line. He also had seven rebounds, a team-high, and a game-high five blocked shots.
Miles Orman came off of the bench to play 12 minutes, scoring three points and recording two steals.
Marist returns to action on Wednesday, February 18th, hosting Manhattan at 7:30 pm in a MAAC game at the McCann Center.
