Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College women's basketball team dropped its final home game of the 2003-04 season, 57-51, to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Siena at the McCann Center this evening. The Red Foxes fall to 16-10 on the year and 12-5 in MAAC play, while the Saints improve to 16-10 on the year and 12-5 in conference action. Marist, Siena and Niagara are all tied at 12-5 entering the final days of MAAC play.
Trailing 27-21 at the intermission, Marist opened the second half with a 4-0 run to close to 27-25 2:31 into the half. The Saints answered with a 7-0 run to expand the lead to double-digits, 36-25, with 12:08 remaining. Marist would get to within six over the next five minutes, but The Saints would maintain an 11-point edge, 46-35, with 6:49 to play.
The Saints held a nine-point edge, 55-46 with 55 seconds remaining after a pair of Nathalie Marchino free throws. Kristin Keller for jumper. Keller connected on the lay-up, with 37 seconds left, and hit the free throw to make the score 55-51, Siena. Kresge stole the ensuing inbound, by a three-pointer from Nina Vecchio was rebounded by Siena to seal the Red Foxes fate.
Maureen Magarity tallied 12 points and three rebounds for the Red Foxes, while Keller came off of the bench to lead Marist with 13 points. Stephanie Del Preore had a team-high 10-rebounds, along with six points. Vecchio had six points and five assists in her final home game.
Siena received a 14-point effort from Marchino and a 15-point night from Jolene Johnston. Sherron Burgess had a game-high 15 rebounds, to go along with eight points.
Marist completes the regular season on Sunday, February 29th, traveling to New Rochelle, NY to take on Iona College. A win gives the Red Foxes a share of the MAAC Regular Season title, the first for the program.
