Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College men's basketball team dropped its final home game of the 2003-04 season, 84-59, to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Niagara at the McCann Center this evening. The Red Foxes fall to 6-20 on the year and 4-13 in MAAC play, while the Purple Eagles improve to 18-8 on the year and 12-5 in MAAC play.
Niagara jumped on top early and never let up, taking a commanding 43-21 lead into the intermission. The Purple Eagles shot 54.8 percent (17-31) in the first half and out rebounded Marist 24-18.
The Red Foxes opened the second half with a 16-7 run to close to within the closest margin of the second half, with 14:52 remaining. Tremmell Darden, who led all scores with 27, ended the run with a three-pointer 15 seconds later, to start an 11-4 run to expand the lead back to 20 points, 61-41 with 11:58 to play.
Senior Dennis Young had nine points and five rebounds, four offensive for the game. He tallied eight of his points and all of his rebounds in the second half of play. Carl Hood scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, while Will McClurkin added 11 points. Rookie Jared Jordan had four points, five rebounds and five assists, but only one turnover in 30 minutes of play.
Marist ended up out rebounding the Purple Eagles 43-42 for the game and held a commanding 21-10 advantage on the offensive glass. However Marist only had 13-second chance points to show for the effort.
Four Niagara players scored in double-digits, with a double-double from James Reaves, who finished with 15 points and 14 boards. Juan Mendez added 14 points and David Brooks had 12 for Niagara. Alvin Cruz had nine points and seven assists in his 29 minutes of play.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, February 29th, as they travel to Riverdale, NY to take on Manhattan in a 2:00 pm contest.
