NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped as they fell to Niagara 65-54 this evening at the Gallagher Center. The Red Foxes fall to 12-8 overall, 8-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) but still remain in first place in the conference.
The Purple Eagles came out firing, making three of their first four field goals before missing its next eight shots. Marist responded and took a 10-6 lead before a Ann Mimm three-point field goal gave the Purple Eagles an 11-10 lead. The teams traded runs for the remainder of the first half before Niagara closed the half with an 8-2 run for a 34-29 lead.
In the second Colleen Toetz scored seven of Niagara's first nine second-half points to keep the Purple Eagles in the lead. Niagara's lead reached double digits for the first time when sophomore Danie Mosca hit a three-point field goal for a 54-44 lead with 7:07 to play. The Red Foxes continued to fight back, pulling with in six on a Maureen Magarity lay-in at the 5:30 mark, but it was not enough as Niagara made its final eight foul shots on its way to the win.
Magarity led the Red Foxes with 16 points while Kristin Keller added 10 points and eight rebounds. Stephanie Del Preore had her eight-game double-figure scoring streak snapped finishin with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Toetz led the way for Niagara with 26 points on 10-15 shooting. Mimm had 12 points while freshman Shaunna Ambrose had a career-high 10 points in a reserve role.
As a team, Marist shot 40 percent from the floor and outrebounded Niagara 43-30.
The Red Foxes look to remain atop the MAAC as they finish their four-day road swing at Canisius on Sunday.
