Poughkeepsie-- The Marist College men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the dual meet portion of the 2003-04 season with home victories this afternoon. The men completed a 10-2 dual meet season with a 126-97 win over Seton Hall, while the women defeated the Pirates 134-98, ending the season with an 8-4 mark.
The Marist women started off the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay and then by placing first and second in two of the first three individual events. Emily Heslin and Karen Finnerty swam away with the 1,000 freestyle, as Heslin touched first in 10:40.37, followed by Finnerty, with a time of 10:44.51. Two events later, Jen Meyer captured the 50 freestyle, touching in a time of 25.39, while freshman Kim Koehler touched closed behind in 25.45. Heslin and Meyer would both go on to win another individual event on the day, with Heslin winning the 500 freestyle (5:11.48) and Meyer the 100 freestyle (56.16) for the Red Foxes. Karen Fleckenstein won the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:10.30
The Red Foxes won both diving events for the men and the women. Meghan Duffy won the three-meter event with 259.95 points, just knocking off Amber VanDeCarr who placed second with 251.03 points. The places reversed in the one-meter event, with VanDeCarr captured that event with 243.90 points, while Duffy scored 241.80 points.
Anthony Manza won both boards on the men's side for the Red Foxes, scoring 238.42 points on the one-meter board and 213.98 on the three-meter board. Manza was one of three double winners for the Red Foxes on the day.
Joe Pilweski won the 200 individual medley for the Red Foxes in a time of 1:56.97 and then captured the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:55.42. Matt Castillo also captured a pair of first place finishes on the afternoon winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:43.69 and the 100 freestyle in a time of 47.47. Castillo also posted the fastest 200 breaststroke time in the meet, 2:11.74, but swam the event exhibition, with the outcome of the meet already decided. Jeff Paul won the 50 freestyle for Marist, who also won the 400 medley relay to open the meet.
The Red Foxes will have next weekend off as they prepare for the 2004 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming and Diving Championships. The men look to captured their ninth straight title, while the women, who have won five titles in eight years, will look to improve from their third place finish a season ago. The MAAC Championship will be held February 19-21st in Baltimore, MD at Loyola College.
