BUFFALO, N.Y.- The women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped falling to Canisius 64-51. With the loss, the Red Foxes (12-9, 8-4) move into a three-way time for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with Canisius (13-8, 8-4) and Niagara (14-7, 8-4).
The Griffs opened the game on 12-2 run, but the Red Foxes countered with a run of their own, pulling with three on a layup by Maureen Magarity. Nina Vecchio drained a three-pointer as Canisius' Jess Steves was whistled for a foul underneath. The basket counted, Marist retained possession and Del Preore made a layup to cut the margin to 12-7. Leading 12-9 with 14:24 to go in the first half, Canisius held Marist to eight points the rest of the frame and led 32-17 at halftime. During that stretch, the Red Foxes committed seven turnovers and shot 18.7 percent (3-for-16) from the field.
Marist came out of the break strong exchanging baskets with the Griffs over the first two minutes of the half, but were unable to cut into the Canisius lead.
The Red Foxes were led by senior Maureen Magarity chipped in 10 points.
Junior Kristin Keller tallied eight points and a team-high seven boards, while freshman Shannon Minter came off the bench to score a career-high seven points on 3-5 shooting. Senior Vicki Wancel played well at both ends of the floor, scoring four points and dishing out a season-high four assists, while recording two steals and a block.
For Canisius, senior Jenel Stevens recorded a double-double with 23 points and 12 boards while sophomore Cheri Wittlieb added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Becky Zak had nine points and dished out nine assists.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Thursday, February 12th at 7:00pm in the McCann Center as tip-off against Manhattan.
