Towson, Md. - Towson senior shortstop Brian McKenna (Watkins Mills H.S./Germantown, Md.) had three hits and drove in three runs as Towson University (6-7) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over Marist College (2-11) at Schuerholz Park on Friday afternoon.
Marist took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Keith Brachold (Feehan H.S./Attleboro, Mass.), scoring freshman Travis Musolf (Manchester H.S./Manchester, N.J.) from third base.
Towson tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice fly by freshman Brian Summerlin (Owings Mills H.S./Reistertown, Md.) that scored junior Mark Chiccini (Pottsville Area H.S./St. Clair, Pa.).
Senior shortstop Eric Johnson (Kishwaukee H.S./Forest, Ill.) gave the Red Foxes a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning with a single that scored Musolf and freshman Thomas Ciccarone (Immaculata H.S./Somerville, N.J.).
The Tigers rallied to take a 4-3 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After sophomore Adam Heffron (Hammond H.S./Laurel, Md.) and sophomore Casper Wells (Schenectady H.S./Schenectady, N.Y.) walked and advanced on a passed ball, McKenna hit a double to left field, scoring both runners and tying the game at 3-3 with no outs. McKenna moved to third base on a passed ball before senior Bobby Paduano (St. Anthony's H.S./Huntington, N.Y.) drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Tigers a one-run advantage.
The Red Foxes tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo homerun to right field by junior Chris Watters (St. Ignatius Prep/San Francisco, Cal.) off Tiger starter Brian Brewer (Hammond H.S./Columbia, Md.).
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, McKenna gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead with his third homerun of the season, a solo shot to left field off sophomore Kevin Shurtleff (Durfee H.S./Fall River, Mass.).
Marist retook the lead at 6-5 with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Tyler Brock (Delaware Tech/Georgetown, Del.) led off the inning with a double to left field off Tiger reliever Luke Thomas (Calvert Hall College H.S./Baltimore, Md.). With one out in the inning, Musolf gave the Red Foxes the lead with a two-run homerun to left field.
Down by two in the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Tigers rallied with five runs to take the 10-6 lead. With one out in the inning, Heffron walked and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by senior Travis Timmons (Delaware Tech/Georgetown, Del.). After Wells walked and McKenna flied out to right field, Paduano walked to load the bases with one out. Chiccini singled to left field to score Heffron from third base and Wells from second base, giving Towson a 7-6 advantage. The Tigers upped the lead to 8-6 with a single from junior center fielder Jeremy Stifler (North Harford H.S./Jarrettsville, Md.), which scored Paduano from second base. Summerlin followed with a single to score Stifler and Chiccini, giving Towson the four-run cushion.
Senior left-hander Steve Swiech (Mount Hebron H.S./Ellicott City, Md.) came on in relief in the eighth inning and shut down the Red Foxes in the final two stanzas to preserve the victory for the Tigers. He allowed just two hits while striking out a pair of Marist hitters and walking one.
Brewer allowed four runs on six hits in six innings before giving way to Thomas, who picked up his second win of the season despite allowing two runs on two hits in the seventh inning. Timmons suffered the loss for the Red Foxes after allowing four runs in recording just one out in the bottom half of the seventh frame.
