March 28, 2004

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (www.fairfieldstags.com) - Marist's Lucas Robinson pitched a complete game shutout, yielding only four hits and striking out three Fairfield University baseball players as the Red Foxes defeated the Stags, 6-0, in the rubber-game of the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series of the season at a windy Alumni Diamond.

Robinson (1-2) already had a four-run cushion to work with before throwing his first pitch of the game, as the Red Foxes (6-15, 2-1 MAAC) torched Fairfield (3-9, 1-2 MAAC) starter, senior Pablo Tamayo for four runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the first inning.

Travis Musolf reached base on an error by the Fairfield shortstop sophomore Doug Anderson on the first pitch of the game. Musolf then advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home when Kevin Grauer struck out, but advanced to second on another wild pitch. Marist then posted a pair of sacrifice flies to take a 4-0 lead.

Marist added a run in the top of the third inning, when Kevin Buck doubled to right centerfield to bring home Bryan Towler who doubled to start the inning. Buck was gunned down at third by a relay from senior Jim Sheridan to Anderson to catcher Tom Arpino, and finally to senior third baseman Sal Mancuso (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage).

The Red Foxes then added a run in the top of the fifth inning when Towler homered to left field.

Marist was led by Towler, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, with a homerun and a double.

Tamayo pitched seven innings for the Stags yielding six runs on five hits, and one walk. He struck out five Red Foxes on the afternoon. Senior Matt Young pitched two scoreless innings for the second day in a row. In the first game of Saturday's twin bill, the Berlin, Conn. native held the Red Foxes scoreless.
