Baseball Rallies For 7-6 Win Over Stony Brook

April 16, 2004

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team rallied for a 7-6 win over visiting Stony Brook, in a scheduled seven-inning contest, this afternoon at the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes improve to 10-19 overall on the year, while the Seawolves fall to 12-15.

The Red Foxes allowed a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and entered their final at-bat trailing 6-4. Travis Musolf singled with one-out, which was followed by a Keith Brachold single. Bryan Towler closed the gap to 6-5 with the Red Foxes third consecutive single, and put runners on first and third. Robert Leonard took over on the mound for Stony Brook, and allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch, before striking out Kevin Buck, for the second out. Justin Lepore provided the game-winning-hit in the next at-bat, singling to right field to score Towler from second ahead of the throw.

Marist trailed 4-0, after the Seawolves tallied a run in the second and three in the third off of starter Jonathan Smith. Marist got two runs back on a balk and an RBI double from Towler in the third, and tied the game at 4-4 in fifth-inning. Musolf and Brachold started the inning with a walk and a single, and would score when Buck singled with one out.

Kevin Kelly earned the win, tossing 2.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned on two hits. Kelly entered the game in the sixth, with runners on first and second, no one-out and a 3-1 count on Andrew Larsen. He walked Larsen to load the bases and then got Justin Michalek to pop-up an attempted suicide squeeze into foul territory. Jimmy Board made the grab and turned the double-play with a throw to third. Kelly then got a fly-out to end the threat with no Stony Brook runs.

Brachold and Musolf both scored three runs for Marist, on the strength of two RBI days from Towler and Buck. Brachold and Towler both went 3-4, while Musolf finished 2-3 with a walk. Smith fanned two, allowing four runs on six-hits in his three-innings. Kevin Shurtleff tossed 2.0 innings, walking four, fanning one and allowing no runs on no hits.

Lyons (0-1) took the loss for Stony Brook, giving up three runs on three hits and fanning three in 2.0 innings. Paul Carufe started for Stony Brook, lasting 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking none. Larsen was 2-3 with a run scored for Stony Brook, and Kevin Solano finished 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the effort.

Marist earns its second win of the year over Stony Brook, defeating the Seawolves 5-2 in 10-innings on March 23rd. The Red Foxes rallied from a 2-0 deficit that afternoon, and Brachold won the game with a leadoff homerun in the top of the 10th inning.

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, April 17th, as they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius in a double-header slated for a noon start.
