Baseball Sweeps Canisius; Winning 10-1 And 3-1

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team earned a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header sweep this afternoon, defeating visiting Canisius College 10-1 and 3-1 at the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes, winners of three straight, improve to 12-19 overall and 7-4 in conference play, while the Griffs fall to 2-23 on the year and 2-9 in MAAC action.

The Red Foxes pitching was strong in both games, as George Heath, Bobby Hastry and Scott Chambers allowed just two runs on 15 hits over the 16 innings of play on the day. Heath (5-4) earned the win in the first game, allowing one run in his 7.1 innings of work, fanning five and scattering eight hits. Chambers tossed a complete game in the nightcap, giving up just one run on six hits, while fanning eight Griff batters. Hastry tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief in the opener, striking out one and allowing one hit.

The Marist offense got off to a fast start, banging out four hits in the first-inning, but plating just one run. The Red Foxes would add a pair in the third and fifth innings and put up a four spot in the sixth, before adding the 10th run in the seventh inning. Jimmy Board was 3-4 with four RBI in the first game. He picked up two RBI in the third, with a single, and had RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings as well.

Marist scored its runs early in the second game as well, again plating a run in the first and two runs in the third inning. Board again had an RBI, driving in a run in the third with a sacrifice fly.

Marist left 12 men on base in the first game, as they knocked out 15 base hits, with just two for extra bases, and stranded seven runners in the second game.

Dennis Wellman (1-5) took the loss as the Canisius starter in game one, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits in 5.0 innings of work. The Griffs walked eight batters in the first game, while fanning no Marist hitters. Jordan Neufeld (0-4) tossed 6.0 innings in a losing effort in game two, allowing two earned runs on five hits, walking four and fanning three batters.

Board finished the double-header 3-6 with five RBI, while Travis Musolf went 4-9 with four runs scored for the Red Foxes. Bryan Towler went 4-7 on the day, including a 3-5, three RBI effort in the first game. Keith Brachold stayed hot with a 3-7 effort on the day.

The two teams will meet Sunday, April 18th at noon to complete the three-game conference schedule.
