Baseball Hammers St. Peter's 11-1, 18-1 In Double-Header Sweep

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team earned a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header sweep of visiting Saint Peter's, 11-1 and 18-1, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes improve to 15-21 overall and 10-4 in conference action, while the Peacocks fall to 6-19 on the year and 2-12 in the MAAC.

George Heath (6-4) and Scott Chambers (3-5) were the story for the second Saturday in a row for Marist, pitching well in the two starts. Heath went 8.0 innings in the first game, fanning seven, and allowing a run on five hits. Chambers tossed a complete-game in the nightcap, going 7.0 for the win. He had four strikeouts, and allowed one unearned run, scattering seven hits.

Kevin Buck had a career day, homering and doubling, going 3-5 with five runs scored and four RBI. Travis Musolf hit a solo shot to leadoff the fourth inning of the second game. He had four RBI on a 3-5 effort in the second game with a triple and homerun.

Keith Brachold enjoyed a hot day at the plate, going 5-9 with five runs and four RBI in the double-header. In the nightcap he had a three run homer, and also stole two bases in the first game of the day. Tyler Brock went 3-4 in the first game, with a homerun and a pair of double. He had four RBI and three runs scored in the double-header. Bryan Towler was 2-3 with a pair of double in the second game, and scored five runs in the two games combined. Justin Lepore was 4-6 in the two games, while Jimmy Board posted a 3-7 day with two runs and an RBI.

Doug Grant suffered the loss for the Peacocks in game one, falling to 1-7 on the year. Grant allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings, fanning three and walking four. Sean Spicer started the second game, falling to 2-6 on the year, as he allowed 10 runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out two. Mike Scordato was 2-2 in the nightcap, while Lou Proietti went 2-3 with an RBI in the opener. Chris Hernandez was 3-7 with an RBI and a run scored.

Board started the scoring in the first game in the second inning, scoring on a Andy Kiriakedes groundout. The Red Foxes put two more on the board in the third, on the Brock homerun, and took a 4-0 lead in the fourth when Brachold drove in Eric Johnson. The Peacocks cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth, but the Red Foxes plated four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Saint Peter's scored first in game two, when Wayne Guarino scored on a single by Hernandez. The Peacocks had the bases loaded with one out in the inning, before Chambers induced a 1-2-3 groundball double-play to end the threat. Marist answered with five in its part of the first, as the first five batters to hit, scored, and nine players came to the plate. The Red Foxes would add two in the third, and seven in the fourth, an inning in which 11 men came to the plate. Marist would hit around again in the sixth, on the way to four more runs.

The two teams wrap up the three-game weekend series on Sunday, with a nine-inning game, scheduled for 12:00 pm in Poughkeepsie.
