Poughkeepsie, NY - The Marist College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Saint Peter's, 11-5, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes, who had 19 base hits in the game, improve to 16-21 overall with the win and have now won six straight MAAC contests, to improve to 11-4. The Peacocks fall to 6-20 on the season and are now 2-13 in conference action.
The Peacocks got to Marist starting pitcher Lucas Robinson early, putting up three runs on six hits in their first two at-bats, to take a 3-0 lead. Marist got on the board with single runs in the second and third innings. Kevin Buck walked to lead off the inning, and scored from third when Justin Lepore earned a bases loaded walk three batters later. Buck tallied the run in the third inning as well, as he singled with two out, before advancing to third on a single by Tyler Brock. Jimmy Board followed with a single to right field to make the score 3-2.
The Red Foxes tied the score in the fifth as Brock single with one out, and advanced to third on a LePore single, setting up an RBI single from Eric Johnson. The Peacocks retook the lead in the top of the sixth, as Frank Salvano plated Jared Fowler with a one out single, and then scored himself on a single from Chris Hernandez.
Marist took command of the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five hits on six runs, with a Saint Peter's error contributing to the rally. Travis Musolf led off with a single, and Keith Brachold tied the game 5-5 with a homerun to right field. Buck singled with one out and Brock reached on an error. After Board ground into a force at second, LePore single to right to score Buck. Johnson would plate Board in the next at-bat with a single, and chase Peacock starting pitcher Dan Cainas (1-5). Andy Kiriakedes singled off reliever Dave Sangster to give Marist an 8-5 lead. The Red Foxes added a run in the seventh when Board was hit by a pitch, after the Peacocks had intentionally walked Brock to load the bases. Marist ended the scoring with a pair in the eighth inning and an 11-5 lead.
Travis Timmons (2-1) earned the win for the Red Foxes, in relief. He entered and retired the first nine batters he faced, four via strikeout. He went 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, but fanned six and did not walk a batter. Erik Supplee earned a three-inning save, his first of the year, allowing only one-hit and fanning a batter in his body of work. Robinson received a no-decision, allowing three runs on six-hits, fanning two and walking one in 2.0 innings.
Cainas lasted 5.2 innings, giving up eight runs, five earned on 14 hits and three walks, with six strikeouts. Sangster went 2.1 innings for Saint Peter's, allowing three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two.
Brachold and Musolf posted 3-6 days at the plate, both scoring two runs and Brachold driving in a pair on his homerun. Buck finished the game 3-4 with three runs and an RBI. LePore, Board, and Johnson all had two RBI in the win.
Mike Scordato was the offensive threat for the visitor, going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Wayne Guarino had two RBI with a 1-4 day at the plate.
Marist returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Hofstra, in a non-conference contest, set for a 3:30 pm start.
