Box Score
Poughkeepsie, NY -The Marist College baseball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) double-header with visiting Siena College this afternoon, dropping the opener 6-0, before bouncing back to earn a 3-0 win in the nightcap. The Red Foxes are now 22-27 on the year and 14-9 in MAAC play, while the Saints are 27-22 overall and 13-8 in conference action.
Scott Chambers (Albany, NY) was near perfect on the mound for the Red Foxes in the second game, as he took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, before Lou Gattazzi singled to right field, the only Saint hit of the afternoon. Chambers improved to 6-5 with the win, as he fanned five and walked just one in the win. Siena put just one runner in scoring position, in the fourth after an infield error and a walk.
Keith Brachold (Norfolk, MA) provided the offense in the second game for Marist, going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. The RBI came in the third inning, when he drove a ball off of the top of the scoreboard in right field for a leadoff homerun and a 3-0 lead. He singled in the first and came around to score, giving Marist a 2-0 lead at that time.
In the first game, Marist committed four errors and ran into Siena starting pitcher Ryan Bitter. Bitter scattered seven hits over nine innings, fanning five, to improve to 6-5. The Saints tapped game one starter, George Heath (Henrietta, NY) for six runs, only four earned, in his 6.0 innings, as he fell to 6-6. Peter Fuller (Plymouth, MN) allowed two hits in three-innings of relief, fanning two and not allowing a run.
Siena built a 5-0 lead in the first game with three runs in the second and two more in the third, but Marist threatened in the fourth. Bryan Towler (Hampton, NH) and Kevin Buck (Scranton, PA) had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Bitter then fanned back-to-back Marist batters and induced a ground ball for the third out to end the threat. The Red Foxes then loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, before Bitter fanned a batter and got a foul pop up from a pinch hitter to seal the win.
Gattozi was 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for Siena in the first game. Jimmy Board (Ambler, PA) was 2-3 for Marist in the first game.
The double-header split allowed Siena to maintain a one-game lead on the Red Foxes for second place in the MAAC standings.
The two teams will complete the three-game conference set on Sunday, at noon, with a nine-inning contest.
