May 23, 2004

Box Score

Poughkeepsie, NY - Marist College junior Keith Brachold homered twice in leading the Red Foxes to a 14-5 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Baseball foe, Iona, this afternoon on the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes end the regular season at 25-28 overall and 17-10 in MAAC play, and as the fourth seed in the May-27-29th MAAC Tournament. Iona ends its season at 21-31 overall and 11-14 in conference action.

Brachold wasted no time in giving the Red Foxes the lead, as he hit his first homerun after a leadoff walk to Travis Musolf, giving the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. His second came on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth, a solo shot, again over the right field wall. Brachold finished the game 3-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Marist senior Lucas Robinson earned the win, as he went a pre-planned four innings, allowing one run on four hits and fanning three. He improved to 5-3 with the win, as he walked none in the outing.

The Red Foxes banged out 14 hits in the game, as they scored in four of the first five innings. Marist hit around in the second inning, as it scored five runs, to take a 7-1 lead. After a scoreless third for both teams, Marist blew the game open with a six runs fourth inning. The Red Foxes sent 11 to the plate to score the six on four hits with an error. The big blow was a Tyler Brock two RBI, bases loaded single with one out.

Iona scored four runs off of Marist reliever Peter Fuller in the fifth, but all the runs were unearned, after Steve Sallustio reached on a leadoff error by the Red Foxes third baseman.

Prior to the game the Red Foxes honored the seven members of the senior class. Robinson started and earned the win, and classmate Fuller tossed three innings of five-hit, two-strikeout baseball. Travis Timmons allowed a leadoff double in the ninth, before retiring the side in his one inning. Jimmy Board was 2-5 with two runs, and RBI and a double in his final home game. Brock was 1-5 with his two RBI and Eric Johnson went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored in his finale at the McCann Field. Carlos Moscoso made his first collegiate start for Marist, catching the first three-innings and earning a walk at the plate in his last home game.

Iona starter Marty Hand fell to 4-8, as he allowed 11 runs, seven earned, on seven hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. Jesse Tucker allowed three runs on five hits in 1.2 innings, before James Kosky and Sallustio shutout the Red Foxes over the final three innings.

The Red Foxes open MAAC Tournament action on Thursday at 7:00 pm at Dutchess Stadium, when they take on the top-seed, LeMoyne. Marist has qualified for the fifth straight time and sixth time in seven years as a member of the league.
