POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -
The Marist women's soccer team fell to Maine this afternoon, 2-1. Sophomore Deirdre Murray (Belmar NJ) scored her first goal of the season in the hard fought battle against the Black Bears.
The Red Foxes controlled the ball for much of the first half, outshooting Maine 5-3 and keeping the ball out of their half of the field. Despite the offensive push by Marist, Maine's Marie-Andree Canuel slipped one past goalkeeper Danielle Cibelli (Paramus, NJ) with 15:00 remaining in the first half.
Just five minutes into the second half, Murray found the back of the net after two quick passes from Kristina Anderson (Tomkins Cove, NY) and Kristen Leonhard (Succasunna, NJ), who connected directly with Murray to tie the game at 1-1. The Black Bears picked up the offensive pressure in the half, outshooting the Red Foxes, 7-2. Junior midfielder Liz Egan (Shelton, CT) had several huge defensive stops for Marist during the half, while Cibelli picked up three of her five saves.
Maine's Erin Corey picked up the second goal of the game off a quick breakaway, beating Cibelli from the right side at 62:36 to give the Black Bears their final 2-1 lead.
The Red Foxes fell to 1-7 with the loss, while the Black Bears improved to 5-2-1. Marist will next be in action on Friday Sept. 24 when it hosts Delaware State at 7:00 p.m.
