Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist Red Foxes softball team opened the fall portion of its schedule with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Quinnipiac at Gartland Field on Saturday. Marist won the opener 3-1 and took the second game by a 2-1 score.
In Game 1, senior Chrystine McHugh went 3 for 3 with a stolen base to lead the Red Foxes while senior Allison Bartley, junior Jasmery Polanco and freshman Annie Castellano all doubled. Sophomore Lyndsay Ward threw five strong innings to earn the win. Freshman Megan Rigos struck out two in two innings to pick up the save.
Bartley provided all the offense Marist would need in Game 2 with a two-run home run. Polanco chipped in with two hits. Rigos and freshman Kristen Merlino combined to hold the Bobcats to just one run. Rigos struck out three in three innings while Merlino fanned one in four innings.
Marist will host the Red Fox Classic this Saturday at Gartland Athletic Complex. The Red Foxes will be playing three games, facing St. Francis (N.Y.) at 10 a.m. in addition to taking on Seton Hall at 12 p.m. and Sacred Heart at 2 p.m.
