Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist Red Foxes fell to local rival Army 1-0 tonight at Leonidoff Field. The game-winning goal was scored in the 75th minute as a Marist defender accidentally deflected the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a corner kick by Army's Adrian Moreno. Moreno was credited with the goal.
The Red Foxes (2-4) played one man down for the last 57:18 after junior forward Bobby Van Dyke received a red card. Marist managed to keep the pressure on the Black Knights (3-6) despite playing with only 10 players.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Valenti made five saves. Army netminder Matt Wesmiller made three saves to record the shutout.
Tonight's game marked the first time Marist has been shut out this season. The last time the Red Foxes were held scoreless was in a 1-0 home loss to Fairfield last October 26.
The Red Foxes close out the non-conference portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon at Oneonta State. Game time is 1 p.m. Marist will open MAAC play next Friday, Oct. 8 under the lights at Leonidoff Field against Canisius. That game will start at 7 p.m.
