The Marist women's volleyball team opened their season with an exciting win over Patriot League foe Lafayette at the La Salle Invitational. After being up two games to one and losing the fourth game, Marist came out swinging in the fifth, dominating Lafayette with a 15-3 win, spurred by the serving talents of sophomore Sally Hanson (Guerneville, CA) and junior Kelly Teagle (Hopewell Junction, NY).
The Red Foxes lost the first game of the match, 30-27 then won games two and three, 30-27 and 30-22. They were set to take the match in four when the Leopards came storming back, taking a close game four 31-29. Game five would prove to be a turning point for the Red Foxes, who delivered the final blow with the 15-3 win.
Hanson and junior Meghan Cochrane (Placentia, CA) each had a double-double to lead the Red Foxes. Hanson recorded 22 kills and 10 digs, along with five service aces while Cocharane led the team with 40 assists and chipped in 11 digs. Sophomore Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, PA) and freshman Christy Lukes (Mesa, AZ), in her first collegiate game and start, recorded 10 and nine kills, respectively. Junior Katie Lux (Wantagh, NY) picked up 23 digs for the Red Foxes, the most on the squad. Lukes also chipped in on four blocks to lead the Marist defense.
Lafayette was led by Michaela Donohue and Veronica Canto-Ponce, who added 13 and 12 kills, respectively, and Karla Barbiche recorded 17 digs.
This was the first game of the season for the Red Foxes, and their first win. They will face host La Salle tonight at 7:00 p.m. as they continue their quest for the tournament title.
