The Marist women's volleyball team soundly defeated Coppin State in three games this morning. It was the third of four games at the La Salle Invitational for the Red Foxes, whose record improved to 2-1 with the win. Twelve different players saw action for Coach Sarah Watters' squad, who had a .310 hitting percentage during the game.
Coppin State came out tough in the first game, holding the Red Foxes to a tie game until 16-16, when the Red Foxes kicked it into high gear and managed to close out the game with a 30-21 win. Their momentum continued for the rest of the match as they came out on top in the second (30-20) and third (30-15) games. Freshman Christy Lukes (Mesa, AZ) led Marist with nine kills and three service aces, while hitting .500 percent during the match.
Sophomore Sally Hanson (Guerneville, CA) paced the Red Foxes with eight kills, two service aces and two solo blocks. Junior libero Katie Lux (Wantagh, NY) had 10 digs to lead the Marist defense, while sophomore Jaime Kenworthy (Aston, PA) recorded six. Junior Meghan Cochrane added 32 assists to push the Red Foxes' offense.
The Golden Eagles were led by Shauniece Steward who recorded 12 digs and five kills
in the losing effort.
The Red Foxes will be back in action this afternoon in their final match of the tournament against Hartford at 2:00 p.m.
