POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Redshirt freshman Ryan Stilphen scored 17 points in Marist's 77-66 victory over Siena Friday evening at the James J. McCann Center. The Red Foxes move to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC, while Siena drops to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The Red Foxes rocketed out to a 12-2 lead early in the first half on a 3-pointer by Ben Farmer with 15:35 left. Marist managed to keep the Saints at bay over the rest of half, taking a 39-33 advantage into the locker room.
Marist finished the half shooting 15-for-29 (51.7 percent) with the win, while Siena shot just 35.5 percent (11-for-31).
Siena charged back in the second half, closing the gap to one (57-56) on a jumper by Antoine Jordan with 8:34 remaining. However, Marist blew the lead back out to 11 on a 10-0 spurt over the next 2:57, culminating with a Farmer 3-pointer with 5:37 remaining. The Saints could get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Marist's Carl Hood chipped in a season-high 14 points in the win, knocking down three of four 3-point attempts. The Red Foxes connected on 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) for the game, while Siena dropped just eight of 27 shots (29.6 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Red Foxes also boasted two more players on double figures with Will McClurkin's 12 and Will Whittington's 10.
Tommy Mitchell led Siena with 22 points, while Jordan posted 16 and David Ryan had 11. Jordan also cleaned the glass for 15 rebounds, leading the Saints to a 43-32 advantage in the category.
Marist shot a season-high 57.4 percent (27-for-47) from the floor, while Siena tossed in 33.8 percent (23-for-68). The Saints did win the free throw battle, shooting 66.7 percent from the charity stripe (12-for-18), while Marist shot just 54.5 percent (12-for-22).
The Red Foxes will have a quick turnaround as they host defending MAAC Champion Manhattan on Sunday at 4 p.m. The game will be televised locally on Time Warner Cable 6.
