The Marist women's soccer team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Siena at the Christian Brothers Academy (Colonie, N.Y.) this afternoon. Katie Goodwin tallied the eventual game winner just 5:35 into the game with a high, hard shot from 30 yards out.
Marist rebounded from the early goal and maintained possession for much of the game, boosted by a solid afternoon in goal from freshman Anna Case (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). Case faced 15 shots from the Saints and made seven saves on the day.
The Red Foxes had several big opportunities to score, tallying nine shots on goal to Siena's eight. Brittany Shellington (Hanover, Mass.) was inches from tying it before halftime with a shot from the right side that just missed the corner of the goal.
Marist took four corner kicks in the second half, but was just shy of the goal on three different occasions. Siena's Carey Winkler was on target in goal, picking up eight saves including four in the second half.
Junior Justine Caccamo (Bohemia, N.Y.) led the Marist attack with five shots, including four on goal. Senior defender Amanda Kulik (Kinnelon, N.J.) recorded two shots on goal while playing a solid game on defense.
Liz Egan (Shelton, Conn.) and Melanie Ondrejik (Manalapan, N.J.) patrolled the Marist backfield for the full 90:00 minutes, aiding Case in her defensive efforts.
Marist took 11 shots total (nine on goal) to Siena's 15.
The Red Foxes will head to Fairfield on Friday Oct. 21 for a 7:oo p.m. start.
