BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Soccer Team picked up it's second straight MAAC win on Friday night when it defeated Canisius 2-0 on a clear, cold night in Buffalo. Seniors Kyle Nunes (Ossining, N.Y.) and Tomislav Rogic (Boonton, N.J.) picked up the goals for the Red Foxes who improved to 5-7-1 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC with the victory.
Marist got on the board early and never looked back. In the 14th minute freshman Chris Nacca (Rochester, N.Y.) put a corner kick to the top of the box, from there Nunes beat Canisius goalkeeper Adam Sleyzak to the top right corner. Marist would add an insurance goal just after halftime in the 49th minute. Steve Fantuzzo (Penfield, N.Y.) took a free kick and Rogic was there to head the ball in for his first tally of the season and a commanding 2-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) picked up his second consecutive shutout in the win Friday night. He shutout Rider 2-0 last Sunday. Although the Golden Griffins took 17 shots in the match, Owens was forced to make only three saves in the win. Marist remains unbeaten in games Owens starts, as his record moves to 3-0-1.
Marist took 18 shots in the match, lead by Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) who took eight, seven of which were on goal. Of the 18 shots, 13 of those were on goal forcing Sleyzak to make 13 saves. Canisius held the advantage in corner kicks 6-5, with all six coming in the second half.
Marist will stay in the western part of the state the remainder of the weekend as they square off with Niagara on Sunday afternoon. Following the western swing the Red Foxes will play the remainder of the regular season at home. They return to Leonidoff field on September 29 to play Siena at 7 p.m. Marist rounds out the regular season when they play Fairfield November 4 and Iona on November 6.
