New Rochelle, N.Y. -
The Marist women's soccer team lost a hard-fought contest at Iona this afternoon, 1-0. The Red Foxes were aggressive, taking 14 shots on the day, but a rebound goal by Sherry Black midway through the second half proved enough to give the Gaels the victory.
Marist freshman Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.) and sophomore Liz Herber (Scottsdale, Ariz.) split time evenly in goal, with Nazarechuk tallying two saves and Herber making five.
Defense was the theme of the first half, with the two squads combining for just seven shots (Marist three, Iona four). Both teams came out firing in the second, tallying a total of 25 shots during the period.
Rookie Haley Hart (Scottsdale, Ariz.) paced the Red Foxes attack, taking three shots, all of them on goal. Junior captain Kristen Leonhard (Succasunna, N.J.) also fired three attempts, two that were saved by Iona's Jessica Martin.
The Red Foxes had just one corner kick to Gaels' six, while Iona was offsides two times and Marist none.
Marist finishes the regular season at 4-11-2 (3-5-1 MAAC), finishing sixth in the conference. The Red Foxes will be in action at the MAAC Tournament, hosted by Disney's Wide World of Sports on Oct. 27-31. After receiving a first-round bye, Marist will rematch MAAC rival Siena in the second round. Earlier this season, the Saints squeaked by the Foxes, 1-0 with help from an early goal in what proved a tremendous match-up.
