Marist Offense Runs Wild In 52-34 Win Over Saint Peter's

Oct. 27, 2005

Final Stats

JERSEY CITY, N.J.-Senior quarterback James Luft threw for three touchdowns, while junior reserve running back Frankie Farrington accounted for two more scores as Marist outscored homestanding Saint Peter's 52-34 Thursday evening at Cochrane Stadium. The Red Foxes improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC, while Saint Peter's dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the league.

The Red Foxes got out on top with 3:22 left in the first quarter on a five-yard scoring run by sophomore Obozua Ehikioya (West Hempstead, N.Y.) to make the score Marist 7-0.

Sophomore placekicker Bradley Rowe (Stratham, N.H.) booted a 37-yard field goal just 14 seconds into the second half to extend the Red Foxes' advantage to 10-0.

Saint Peter's fired right back 3:43 later with a one-yard run by Shaun Puluse to pull the Peacocks to within 10-6.

Ehikioya posted his second rushing touchdown of the contest at the 10:23 mark of the second quarter with a three-yard touchdown carry after junior running back Frankie Farrington (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) ripped off a career-long 75 yard run to set up the score.

Just over one minute later, Saint Peter's J.P. Larmore rumbled 58 yards down the field for the Peacocks' second touchdown of the contest to pull the home team to within three points at 17-14.

The Red Foxes roared back down the field and dented the scoreboard once more on Luft's 39-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Guy Smith to put the Red Foxes up 24-14. The touchdown catch was Smith's fifth of the season, tying him for first in the Marist I-AA single-season records with former Marist standouts Jon Reed (1996) and Joe Calabria (1998).

Marist continued to pour it on at the end of the first half when senior running back Brian Crimmel bowled over for a two-yard touchdown at the 4:22 mark for the halftime margin.

Luft got into the scoring parade in the opening possession of the second half with a 12-yard run to put Marist up 38-14 with 11:13 to go in the third to put Marist up 38-22.

Larmore scored his second touchdown of the game six seconds into the fourth quarter on a two yard scoring toss from Saint Peter's quarterback Scott Bonnono. Bonnono capped off the score with a two-point pass to Larmore to bring the Red Foxes to within 16 at 38-22.

Luft capped his evening by hitting Farrington out of the backfield for a 60-yard scoring pass to put the Red Foxes up 45-22.

Puluse scored his second touchdown of the contest for Saint Peter's on a six-yard scoring run at the 6:19 mark, but that score was quickly chased by Luft's third touchdown pass of the season to junior wideout Prince Prempeh (Hamilton, N.J.) with 6:07 to go for the final Marist score of the game. Prempeh's reception, his fifth scoring catch of the season, equaled the single-season touchdown reception mark that Smith set earlier in the contest.

Puluse ran in from four yards out with just 1:18 for his third and final touchdown of the game.

Farrington finished with 105 yards rushing and one touchdown, while Ehikioya had 36 yards and two scores. Saint Peter's was led by Larmore's 127 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown, although Puluse's three scores loomed large.

Luft finished the evening 11-for-16 with a career-high three touchdown tosses and one interception to go with 319 yards through the air, which represents and all-time school record.

Smith finished with four catches for 132 yards and the touchdown to lead the receiving corps.

Sophomore Dan Smith posted 11 tackles, including two tackles for loss and a pair of sacks to lead the Red Foxes' defense. The Reston, Va. native has 22 tackles in his last two games.

Marist will travel to Iona next Saturday, Nov. 5 for a MAAC contest scheduled for 1 p.m.
