Kissimee, Fla. -
Sixth seeded Marist upset third seed Siena, 2-0 this afternoon at the MAAC Quarterfinals at Walt Disney World's Wide World of Sports. Senior captain Kat Murray's first goal of the season would prove to be the game-winner in the Red Foxes first postseason victory since 2001.
Murray's goal, the second of her career, came at 16:09 in the first half to give the Red Foxes the lead they would not relinquish. She capitalized off a failed clear by a Siena defender and put away a beautiful left-footed shot from outside the 18.
The Saints possessed the ball well in the first, but Marist freshman Anna Case made five saves to keep the Red Foxes ahead. Marist took its 1-0 lead into halftime and kept the momentum rolling through to the second half.
"We continued to get better as the game went on," said Head Coach Elizabeth Roper. Marist was solid in the second half, defending the goal well and allowing just two shots on goal for Case to save.
Marist sealed the victory at 83:30 with a one-time volley into the net by junior Kristen Leonhard off a pass from classmate Justine Caccamo.
Case finished the day with seven saves in goal, while Siena's Carey Winkler had two.
Despite outshooting Marist, 22-7, Siena was unable to convert for a goal. The Saints took seven shots on goal to the Red Foxes' four.
With the win, the Red Foxes advanced to the MAAC Semfinals for the first time since 2001. They will face Niagara at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 30 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
