Red Foxes Take Fourth Straight, Top Siena 2-1

Oct. 29, 2005

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Soccer team continued their roll on Saturday night as they defeated Siena 2-1 for their fourth straight win. Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Luis Andre (Matawan, N.J.) scored for Marist, who improved to 7-7-1 overall and 5-2 in the MAAC.

The two teams played scoreless for the first 71 minutes of the match, until Marist's Bobby Van Dyke (Annapolis, Md.) was able to find his way inside the 18-yard box. Once inside he fed Detelj with a perfect pass that he headed past Siena goalkeeper Patrick Henry for the first goal of the game and a 1-0 lead. Just over 2:00 later Marist took a two-goal advantage on an odd scoring chance. A Siena defender attempted to play the ball to his own keeper when he chipped it over his head and off his own crossbar. The ball bounded out right to Andre's foot and he put it home for his first career goal and the game winner.

Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) again got the nod in net and Marist remains undefeated when he gets the start, with a record of 5-0-1. Owens made two saves on the night. He gave up a goal to Siena's Thomas Ciovacco at the 83:31 mark, as the Saints cut the deficit to 2-1. The sophomore has been a key piece in the Red Foxes string of wins, as he has been in net for all four and has posted shutouts in two of those wins.

After the Siena goal the Saints had several near misses in their bid to tie the game. The Red Foxes defense was up to the task though and was able to keep the lead and gain an important win.

With the victory Marist stays in a tie for second place in the MAAC and is just one point behind front running Fairfield. The Stags will pay a visit to Poughkeepsie on Friday, November 4 in what proves to be an important MAAC battle. Kick-off for the match is slated for 7 p.m. at Leonidoff Field.
