Final Stats
RIVERDALE, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Soccer team opened the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule with a hard fought 2-1 come from behind victory at Manhattan on Friday afternoon. Ben Castor (Richboro, Pa.) picked up his first goal of the season to tie things at 1-1 in the second half and then assisted on Anthony Graci's (King's Park, N.Y.) game winner in overtime.
Javier Escobedo got the scoring under way in the match just after halftime off a pass from Chris Smith at the 47:10 mark. The score would stay 1-0 until Castor banged home a pass from freshman Steve Fantuzzo (Penfield, N.Y.) in the 76th minute to tie things up. Ninety minutes would not be enough to settle things, though, so the Red Foxes went to overtime for the fourth time this year. With just over a minute left in the first overtime Graci knocked in a rebound off a Castor shot to send Marist to the win.
Graci has been a big spark for the Marist in the past three contests. Against Albany on September 28, he picked up two assists in a 3-3 tie. He followed that performance up with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 Red Foxes victory at Philadelphia on October 1. Friday's performance gives Graci two goals and four helpers on the year for Marist.
Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) went the distance for Marist in net for the second time in three matches against the Jaspers. He allowed just the one goal on Friday and made four saves for his first win in a Marist uniform.
Marist held the advantage in total shots 19-8 and in shots on goal 9-5. Marist also held the advantage in corner kicks at 6-4.
The win moves Marist to 3-5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MAAC. Next up for the Red Foxes is a trip to Saint Peter's on Sunday for another MAAC tilt. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Jersey City.
