Red Foxes Use Tough Defense To Down Delaware

Nov. 26, 2005

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-The Marist men's basketball squad placed four players in double figures while playing tough defense in a 64-48 win over visiting Delaware Saturday evening at the McCann Center. The Blue Hens' 48 points was the fewest allowed for the Marist program since allowing just 47 to Delaware State in a 72-47 Marist win on November 19, 1999. Marist improved to 1-1 with the win, while Delaware fell to 2-3 overall.

After a seesaw first 10 minutes, the Red Foxes jumped out to a seven point lead (22-15) at the 5:41 mark of the first stanza on a pair of free throws by junior Miles Orman (Englewood, N.J.).

After the Blue Hens closed to 32-26 at the 16:54 mark in the second half, Marist grabbed control of the game with a 18-7 run over the next 6:58 to power out to 50-33 advantage at the 9:56 mark on a 3-pointer by senior Carl Hood (Houston, Tx.). The Red Foxes grew the lead to as much as 18 points (58-40) at the 3:45 mark on a tip-in by redshirt sophomore Ryan Stilphen (Bay Village, Ohio).

Stilphen (14), junior Jared Jordan (13), junior James Smith (12) and freshman Gerald Carter (11) all posted double digits, while Stilphen, Smith and Orman (career-high) all snared seven rebounds apiece. Jordan led the Red Foxes with six assists after playing 40 minutes for the second consecutive game.

Delaware was led by Calvin Cannon, who had 12 points. Herb Courtney and Zaire Taylor posted 10 points apiece. Courtney snatched a game-high 14 rebounds, while Harding Nana had 11.

The Red Foxes finished the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-for-56), while Delaware tossed in an ice-cold 29.2 percent on 19-for-65 shooting. The Blue Hens had the edge around the 3-point arc, making 26.3 percent (5-for-19), while Marist went 3-for-13 (23.1).

Marist made nine of its 13 free throws (69.2 percent), while Delaware made just 50 percent (5-for-10).

The Red Foxes will be back in action Saturday at Lafayette for a 1 p.m. tip. Marist downed the Leopards 83-79 last season in Poughkeepsie.
