Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist Men's Soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision to Fairfield on Friday night in Poughkeepsie. The loss ends a four game winning streak for the Red Foxes, as they fell to 7-8-1 overall and 5-3 in the MAAC. With the win Fairfield clinched the #1 seed for next weekend's MAAC Tournament.
Marist got off to a quick start as they took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Ben Castor (Richboro, Pa.) beat a Fairfield defender on a 50-50 ball and made his way towards the 18-yard box. He made a nifty pass inside the box to Bobby Van Dyke (Annapolis, Md.) who buried his shot in the upper right hand corner of the goal for the lead.
Fairfield would get the equalizer in the 30th minute on a bullet off the foot of Sam Bailey. Bailey took a bounding ball from 20 yards out and beat Marist keeper Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) to the top right-hand corner. Fairfield would tally the game winner in the 85th minute when Alex Cunliffe and Vasilis Androutsos broke free from the Red Foxes' defense. Androutsos took the pass from Cunliffe just at the edge of the 18-yard box and struck a low shot that found the corner just inside the left post.
Shots were hard to come by on Friday night, as the teams took just four apiece. Owens gave up two goals on those four shots as Marist fell for the first time in a game he started. Fairfield's keeper Andrew Frankel made one save as the Stags improved to 11-3-3 overall and 7-0-1 in MAAC play.
The game saw just three corner kicks, as Marist held the advantage in that category 2-1.
The Red Foxes are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they host Iona on Senior Day. The festivities are set to get under way at Leonidoff Field at 1 p.m.
