Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- You could not have written a better script for the Marist Men's Soccer team on Sunday afternoon. Following senior day festivities prior to the match and an early deficit, the Marist Men's Soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory in the final minute against Iona. Senior Peter Rea (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored the game winner with just 35 seconds left in regulation to improve Marist's record to 8-8-1 overall and 6-3- in the MAAC.
Marist fell behind 1-0 at the 13:48 mark, when Nicholas Smaldone carried a pass from Felipe Faundez to the 18-yard box and beat Marist keeper Daniel Owens (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y) to the upper left corner. That was the only goal in the first half as Iona held the one goal advantage until just under 20 minutes left in the second half.
Just over midway through the second half junior Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) came off the bench and had an immediate impact on the match. With Marist trailing by the one goal, Detelj took a pass from Rea and tucked a shot inside the left post for the equalizer at 70:54. With the goal the junior leads the Red Foxes in points with 21 and is tied for the team lead in goals with eight.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 until just over a half minute left in regulation. With the Iona defense pinching up senior Ben Castor (Richboro, Pa.) fed Rea with a pass down the right side. Rea streaked towards the box and let a shot fly that beat Iona keeper Tom Orbackz for the game winner at 89:25. Rea finished his final home game at Marist with the game winning goal and the assist on Detelj's marker.
Marist closed out the regular season winning five of their final six games and will be in action again Friday when they travel to Fairfield for the MAAC Tournament. Game times on the first day are slated for 3 and 6 p.m.
