Marist's frontcourt duo of Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) and Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) combined for 37 points to lead the Red Foxes past Saint Peter's 60-43 tonight. Camara tallied 16 points in the first half alone, single-handedly outscoring the Peahens as Marist led 27-15 at the break.
Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored the first bucket of the night for Marist with a 3-pointer, but that would not set the tone for the evening. The Red Foxes went just 1-13 in the first half from downtown, but improved to 44% in the second half.
Following Viani's bucket, Marist went on an 11-4 run to gain a 14-4 advantage at 13:54. After giving up a pair of free throws to the Peahens, the Foxes continued to roll offensively, gaining a 20-10 advantage after a Camara jumper at 6:53. A Tiffany Jones layup and Johnell Burts free throw pulled Saint Peter's within seven, 20-13, the closest the visitors would come for the rest of the game. Marist went on a 7-2 mini-run with four points by Camara to take a 27-15 halftime advantage.
Marist came out strong in the second half, going on a 14-4 run to take a 41-19 advantage at 13:54 in the half. During the run, junior Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, N.Y.). Each time Saint Peter's would make a bucket, Marist had an answer and led by 26 points, 52-26 after a Viani three at 7:42.
The Red Foxes took a game-high advantage, leading 57-30 with 5:05 left to play. Saint Peter's staged a late comeback, scoring 12 straight points against Marist reserve players. Alexis Waters (Lansing, Mich.) closed out scoring with a late jumper for the 60-43 win.
Camara tied her career-high with 23 points along with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Dahlman joined her in double figures with 14, while Viani added eight. Kresge handed out a game-high five assists while snagging two blocks and a steal.
Marist forced 20 Saint Peter's turnovers, while losing just ball just 11 times. Khalisha Lewis and Jones led the Peahens with 10 points each.
Marist improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC, while Saint Peter's fell to 1-3 (0-1 MAAC).
The Red Foxes are back in action on Sunday when they head to Cornell for a non-conference matchup.
