Four players in double figures led Marist past Cornell Sunday night, 68-53. Fifi Camara (Conakry, Guinea) had another impressive outing with 18 points and 15 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. The Red Foxes held the Big Red to just 27% shooting from the field, including a 6-32 showing in the first half.
Marist got out to a quick 17-4 lead just six minutes into the contest with points from four different players including five from redshirt freshman Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Cornell responded with eight straight points, down 17-12 at 12:04. The Foxes went on an 11-6 run to go up 28-18 after Camara completed a three-point play. The Big Red scored just five more points on the half while Marist kept the pressure on with back-to-back threes from Viani and Kristen Vilardi (Fishkill, N.Y.) to lead 40-23 at the break.
Cornell scored six quick points to open the second half before Marist rattled off nine-straight to hold a 49-29 advantage at 14:35. Marist led by as many as 21 points before Cornell scored six straight but a three-pointer by Camara took the score back to 56-38, Red Foxes at 8:18.
Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) connected on her and-one free-throw to put Marist up 60-41 at 5:12 in the second half. Marist utilized its reserves after a timeout and Cornell managed a 12-2 run, trailing 62-53 at 1:29. The Red Foxes scored seven straight and held the Big Red scoreless, good for the 68-53 final.
Marist's starters outscored Cornell's 56-23 and did not allow any double-digit scorers for the home team.
Camara finished with 18 points, 15 rebounds as well as two assists, two steals and a block. Viani was solid for Marist, tallying 14 points, six rebounds and two assists. Dahlman posted a career-high four blocks along with 11 points and three assists while Vilardi drained 10 points and dished out four helpers.
Claire Perry led the Big Red with nine points and five rebounds.
With its fourth straight win, Marist improves to 3-4 overall (1-0 MAAC) while Cornell falls to 2-5 on the season.
The Red Foxes return home to host MAAC foe Iona in a doubleheader on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
