The Marist crew teams kicked off their spring season with races against Clemson, Buffalo, Purdue and Indiana at Clemson yesterday. The men's crew competed against Purdue in five races, winning three, while the women took on the Boilermakers along with Buffalo, Indiana and Clemson.
On the men's side, the first novice eight boat defeated Purdue's while the second novice eight fell to Purdue's lightweight squad by six seconds, finishing in 7:01.5. The men's varsity eight fell to the Boilermakers, with Purdue finishing in 6:17.1 and the Foxes coming in at ar25.0. The second (junior) varsity eight defeated Purdue with a time of 6:30.7 and the varsity four won in a time of 7:25.3, nearly 40 seconds ahead of the competition.
On the women's side, the highlight proved to be a third place finish by the second (junior) varsity eight with a time of 7:19.4. They placed just behind Clemson and Indiana, and ahead of two Buffalo boats and a second Indiana crew. The novice eight finished fifth with a time of 8:31.6 while the lightweight boat came in fourth in 8:23.4. The varsity eight finished fifth with a time of 7:26.5, behind Indiana, Clemson, Purdue and Buffalo.
The Red Foxes will spend the rest of the break training in South Carolina before their next race against Hobart, William Smith and Ithaca in Geneva, NY on April 2.
