Marist Falls To Radford In Both Games Of Doubleheader, 4-1 and 6-4

RADFORD, Va. - Radford baseball completed the three-game sweep of visiting Marist, defeating the Red Foxes 4-1 and 6-4 in a non-conference Sunday twinbill at Dedmon Center Park. RU won Saturday's game 12-3.

Radford (4-12) got a complete game pitching performance on the mound in game one from Justin Morgan (1-3), who earned his first win of the season. Morgan allowed six hits and just one run in seven innings pitched.

Marist (1-11) struck first in game one, scoring its only run when right fielder Keith Brachold grounded out to second to drive in third baseman Travis Musolf. The Highlanders tied the game in the bottom of the third on a single up the middle by first baseman Mark Fleisher, scoring centerfielder Steve Mignogna.

Radford added two runs in the fourth when shortstop Ben Toth doubled down the right field line, scoring his brother, catcher Nate Toth. Mignogna followed with a single to centerfield driving in Ben Toth. RU tallied an insurance run on left fielder Kellen Wohlford's RBI single that scored Fleisher and gave the Highs their final run.

Marist struck first in game two also, scoring when Musolf crossed the plate on a passed ball. RU tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Mignogna that scored third baseman Aaron Ranft.

The Highlanders then exploded for four runs in the third. A passed ball allowed second baseman Alan Ashworth to score. Right fielder Jesse Ross then socked a triple down the left field line, scoring Wohlford and Fleisher. Ross crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter designated hitter Jonathan Spears.

The Red Foxes responded with their own big inning, scoring three in the top of the fourth to pull within one. Brachold singled to right field to score second baseman Joe Sargent. Left fielder Thomas Ciccarone grounded out to shortstop, allowing designated hitter Justin LaPore to reach home. Musolf then singled to left center, scoring Brachold. Radford added one more run in the sixth when Ben Toth hit an RBI single to left, scoring Ranft.

Justin Tubb (2-2) earned the win for RU, throwing 3 2/3 innigns, allowing eight hits on four runs (three earned). Bret Lieberman earned his first save of the year for Radford. Marist's Tom Close took the loss, pitching 2 2/3 innings, surrendering two runs on two hits.

Fleisher led the Highs with a 5-for-6 performance in the two games. Mignogna was 4-for-8 and Ranft 3-for-6 at the plate. Musolf was 3-for-7 while Kevin Grauer went 2-for-5.
