NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Marist baseball team (1-3) took #1 Tulane to extra innings tonight at Turchin Stadium before falling 8-4 on Tommy Manzella's grand slam with two out in the bottom of the 10th.
With the score tied 4-4 after nine and a half frames, Tulane 1B Micah Owings and 3B Brad Emaus drew walks and 2B Cat Everett singled to load the bases off Marist reliever Jonathan Smith (0-1, 18.00). Following a strikeout of CF Nathan Southard, Manzella, the shortstop, blasted a Smith offering over the fence for the walk-off grand slam.
The Red Foxes went up 2-0 early as they loaded the bases with none out in the top of the third on a double from SS Andy Kiriakedes, a single by CF Travis Musolf and a base on balls from LF Thomas Ciccarone. One batter later, C Bryan Towler singled up the middle to score Kiriakedes, followed immediately by 2B Joe Sargent's RBI groundout.
In the top of the fifth, back-to-back singles from Towler and Sargent immediately followed by a Manzella error on 3B Pat Feeney's grounder scored a run. Another run came home on 1B Kevin Buck's single to center field, making the score 4-0 in favor of Marist.
The Green Wave would strike back to tie the game with four runs in the home half of the sixth. With two out, Owings homered off Marist starter Scott Chambers to make it 4-1. After Erik Supplee relieved Chambers, Southard and Manzella followed with an RBI double and a two-run double, respectively to knot the game up. The score would remain tied until Manzella's shot in the 10th.
Towler went 4 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Red Foxes while Sargent and Buck each had two hits and an RBI. Manzella finished 3 for 6 with 6 RBI and a run scored. Sean Morgan earned the win for Tulane (11-1).
The Red Foxes and the top-ranked Green Wave continue their series tomorrow at Turchin Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. EST. Probable starters are Owings (1-1, 3.68) for Tulane and Chris Tracz (0-0, 0.00) for Marist.
