New Orleans, La. - The Marist baseball team (1-5) suffered a sweep this weekend at the hands of top-ranked Tulane, losing 11-5 today in the final game of a three-game series. Thomas Ciccarone hit his first career home run for the Red Foxes.
With two out in the top of the third inning, the sophomore left fielder hammered a J.R. Crowel pitch over the left field wall to put Marist up 1-0.
Tulane took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by home runs off the bats of 1B Micah Owings and 3B Brad Emaus. Owings would homer again in the bottom of the fifth after SS Tommy Manzella led off the inning with a round-tripper. The Green Wave led 6-1 after five innings.
The top of the sixth saw the Red Foxes make a valiant comeback with four runs, paced by an RBI single by DH Justin Lepore, 3B Pat Feeney's RBI double and a two-run single from SS Andy Kiriakedes.
Tulane would put the game out of reach with five runs in the home half of the eighth. The big blow came with two out and the bases loaded when C Greg Dini singled to center field, clearing the bases.
Starter George Heath pitched three shutout innings for the Red Foxes, scattering two hits and striking out two. Reliever Tom Close was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs in two and two-thirds innings. Crowel struck out five in five and two-thirds to earn the win. Daniel Latham earned a two-inning save.
The Red Foxes are back in action this Wednesday, March 9 when they travel to Stony Brook for a 3 p.m. contest.
