JERSEY CITY, N.J.-Visiting Marist swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Saint Peter's, pounding the Peacocks in the opener, 16-8, and then nipping Saint Peter's, 2-1, in nine innings in a game that was scheduled for seven innings.

The Red Foxes, 16-15 overall and 11-3 in the MAAC after the sweep, combined 17 hits and some untimely Saint Peter's errors to score 16 runs in the opener. In the nightcap, each team scored a run in the first inning and then the game stayed scoreless until third baseman Travis Musolf's one-out sacrifice fly for Marist in the top of the ninth.

Saint Peter's, which drops to 3-28 overall and 2-11 in the MAAC, lost the second game despite a strong game from starting righthander Ben Gallo, who allowed one run and four hits in 7.1 innings. Gallo, who did not figure in the decision, worked out of a jam in the top of the seventh, when the first two Marist batters reached on errors.

Senior lefthander Chris Tracz (5-3) was brilliant in the second game for Marist, allowing just three hits and striking out 11, without a walk in nine innings. He allowed two of the hits in the first inning, when Saint Peter's got its run and then retired 18 in a row from the last out of the first inning until third baseman Kevin Kallert singled with two out in the seventh.

Marist got its first-inning run off Gallo on the second home run of the year for right fielder Keith Brachold. The Red Foxes got the winning run off Peacock reliever Chris Innis (1-4), as Pat Feeney walked to lead off the ninth and after an out, second baseman Joe Sargent singled, advancing Feeney to third, setting up Musolf's game-winning sacrifice fly.

In the first game, Marist led, 2-0, heading into the top of the fourth, when it scored seven unearned runs, combining four hits with three Saint Peter's errors. The Red Foxes added single runs in the fifth and seventh, before pouring on five runs (four unearned) in the eighth.

For Marist, starting righthander Scott Chambers (1-5) got the win, pitching the first 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. The Red Foxes used three relievers. Saint Peter's starting RHP Adam Myers (0-6) took the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowing nine runs (two earned), before exiting after being injured by a batted ball.

Shortstop Andy Kiriakedes was 3-for-6 with four RBI in the opener for the Red Foxes, while seven teammates collected two hits apiece. One of them was Brachold, who was 2-for-5, with three RBI.

For Saint Peter's, shortstop Rob Scordato was 3-for-5, with three RBI. Catcher Frank Salvano and first baseman Dave Lewandoski also got three hits each and two of Salvano's hits were doubles. Right fielder Frank Flynn was 2-for-2, with two RBI for the Peacocks, who got 14 hits.

Saint Peter's and Marist are scheduled to close the three-game MAAC series with a single game on Monday at 3:30 pm.
