April 25, 2005

Box Score

JERSEY CITY (April 25)--Marist completed a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball sweep on Monday afternoon, beating Saint Peter's, 21-5.

The Red Foxes, who have won six straight and 10 of the last 11, are now 17-15 overall, while extending their MAAC-leading conference record to 12-3. Saint Peter's is 3-29 overall and 2-12 in the MAAC.

Marist, which pounded out 20 hits, including eight doubles and two triples, also drew 10 walks and was hit by three pitches. Saint Peter's hit well, too, getting 14 hits, including six doubles.

Ninth-place hitter, third baseman Pat Feeney made his first start of the series for Marist and went 4-for-6, with a double and two RBI. Shortstop Andy Kiriakedes, catcher Bryan Towler and right fielder Kevin Grauer all got three hits for the Red Foxes. All three of Kiriakedes' hits were doubles, while Towler doubled twice. Kiriakedes, Towler and first baseman Keith Brachold all drove in four runs apiece.

For Saint Peter's, shortstop Dennis Alexander was 3-for-5, including a pair of doubles, with an RBI. Center fielder Wayne Guarino and second baseman Rob Scordato were each 2-for-3 with a run scored. Scordato also drove in a run.

The winning pitcher for Marist was junior lefthander Jonathan Smith (3-1) who pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits. Despite the lopsided score, freshman lefthander Kevin Dalton got his first college save for finishing the game with at least three effective innings. He worked four innings, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out seven and walking two.

The first of five Saint Peter's pitchers, freshman righthander Santo Maertz, took the loss, falling to 1-8 on the season. He pitched 2.2 innings and was charged with seven runs on eight hits. He left with an injured pitching hand after attempting to knock down a hard-hit line drive up the middle.

Marist's center fielder Travis Musolf tripled on the first pitch of the game, igniting a 3-run first inning for the Red Foxes. But Saint Peter's answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, as Rob Scordato, catcher Frank Salvano and third baseman Jared Fowler all drove in runs.

Marist took the lead for good with a run in the top of the second, as second baseman Joe Sargent led off with a double and scored on Feeney's single to center field.

The Red Foxes then pulled away with five runs in the third, four in the fifth, two in the sixth, five in the seventh and one in the eighth. Saint Peter's got its last two runs in the sixth, as left fielder Rob Salyga, outfielder Frank Flynn and Alexander hit three straight doubles.

Marist will host Central Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the McCann Baseball Field.
