Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Marist freshman Megan Rigos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced today. Rigos had a hand in all six of Marist's victories last week, going 5-0 with a save while racking up 32 strikeouts and a 0.74 earned-run average in 28 1/3 innings.
In the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep at Stony Brook, a 3-1 win in 10 innings, Rigos went the distance, as she has done a MAAC-leading 19 times this season, striking out a career-high 12 batters. She would return with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning in the nightcap, striking out the last batter with runners on first and second to preserve the 1-0 win for classmate Kristen Merlino. It was the conference-leading fourth save of the year for Rigos.
Rigos would come up with another pair of clutch performances on Sunday, earning both wins in the sweep of MAAC rival Siena, tossing a complete-game three-hitter in the opener without allowing an earned run and coming back in the nightcap with three one-hit shutout innings in relief of Merlino, getting the victory when the Red Foxes rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
For the season, Rigos is 16-10 with a 2.48 ERA and 103 strikeouts. Yesterday she became just the second pitcher in program history to win 15 games and strike out 100 batters in the same season.
Marist, 20-16 overall, 6-2 in the MAAC and winners of eight straight, travels to St. John's for a doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
